Shargh Newspaper’s Interview with Daal Band

January 3, 2017

In the concluding part of this interview, the members of Daal Band discuss the importance of teamwork and moving beyond the singer-centered culture prevalent in Iranian music. They describe Daal as a unified collective in which the vocalist, composer, and musicians all contribute to the band’s shared identity and sound.

Emphasizing the importance of understanding traditional and classical music, the members view innovation as the result of consciously connecting the past with the experiences and needs of today’s generation. They believe a work achieves longevity through depth, quality, and lasting impact—not by following temporary market trends. For this reason, they are seeking a fresh musical language for their next album rather than repeating their previous success.

The group also discusses how musicians such as Dhafer Youssef and Avishai Cohen have influenced the arrangements and instrumental colors of their work. They consider the exchange of influences among artists a natural part of the creative process. Amin Hedayati describes traditional Iranian singing as the foundation of his vocal approach, while emphasizing the importance of abandoning prejudice and experimenting with new techniques.

Finally, Daal’s percussionists explain that the variety of instruments used in the band’s music is not intended for spectacle or visual appeal. Each instrument is selected for its tonal color and its role in creating a cohesive musical composition. They believe that combining an understanding of Iran’s native music with instruments and experiences drawn from other cultures can contribute to a more coherent and authentic form of fusion music.
